2016 Mazda Cx-9 Revealed at Los Angeles Auto Show

Posted on November 18, 2015

Mazda’s new three-row crossover, the 2016 CX-9, has debuted at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. It looks much like a stretched CX-5, which is not a bad thing. It follows the 2016 Volvo XC90′s long hood profile, lending a tall-wagon look rather than that of an over-sized crossover. The new CX-9 is 1.2 inches shorter than its predecessor, but a longer wheelbase results and shorter overhangs. The second row of seats slide forward to allow ingress into the third row — which has ample space even for adults (provided they’re under about 6 feet tall). 2016 Honda Pilot Official Photos

Posted on February 12, 2015

Breaking news – Photos are now available of the all-new, third generation 2016 Honda Pilot, which will debut today at the Chicago Auto Show. The new 2016 Pilot adopts a softer, less boxy look than its predecessor. Although details have yet to be confirmed, it will undoubtedly share a version of the 3.5 direct-injection V6 with the Acura MDX. Also evident from the center console is that the 2016 Pilot will use the new ZF 9-speed automatic transmission with push-button shifter as in the new Acura TLX (where it has suffered some issues and is subject to a stop-sale order read more

IIHS Small Overlap Crash Test Reveals Disappointing Results for Minivans

Posted on November 20, 2014

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released the results its small-overlap crash test of three popular minivans (IIHS Press Release here). The small-overlap test is increasingly relevant as distracted driving is on the rise, leading to an increase in these type of crashes (to gain a better understanding of this test, see Car Match’s prior article re: auto safety / crash testing here). The results were “dire” according to the IIHS, with only the just redesigned Toyota Sienna earning an “Acceptable” rating. In a previous test, the 2014 Honda Odyssey managed a “Good” rating – the only minivan read more

News: Tesla Model S ekes out 5-star rating from Euro NCAP, but is inferior to its competitors.

Posted on November 7, 2014

Tesla CEO Elon Musk often likes to boast about the safety of Tesla’s Model S, once tweeting that Tesla’s Model S received the “best safety rating of any car ever tested.” And the Model S certainly did very well in the NHTSA’s tests. Alas for Tesla, not all crash tests are created equal. In its most recent performance in the European NCAP’s crash tests, the Tesla Model S fared somewhat worse than did the competing Audi A6, BMW 5-series, Infiniti Q50, Maserati Ghibli and Mercedes-Benz E-class. To illustrate, the Model S received a score of 82% in the “Adult Occupant” read more

Review: 2014 Mazda 3 Grand Touring

Posted on September 18, 2013

After a decade on the market with only mild refreshes, the Mazda 3 has received a ground-up redesign for 2014. The new 2014 Mazda 3 rides on a brand new chassis and incorporates all of Mazda’s Skyactiv technologies, which are also featured in the Mazda 6 and CX-5. The previous generation Mazda 3 was among the compact class leaders despite being a very old design, so we had high hopes for the new 2014 model. We got our hands on a top-of-the-line 2014 Mazda 3 s Grand Touring hatchback (5-door). Our Mazda 3 Grand Touring stickered for $27,590, but came read more

Review: 2013 Chrysler Town & Country

Posted on September 16, 2013

By: Scott Hobart Really, there are two types of minivan buyers. In the first camp, you have those for whom there’s no question that their next car will be a minivan. In the second camp you have those who need a bigger car, and are presented with a panoply of SUVs…and the minivan. First, note that this is a review of my own car, a 2013 Town & Country (T&C), so unlike most other reviews on this website, my strong personal biases apply. And in what follows, I’ll try and convince both camps that the T&C will satisfy both camps. read more

Rental Car Review: 2013 Toyota Prius

Posted on August 19, 2013

By: Scott Hobart, Contributing Editor There’s a certain sort of traveler that makes it a point to jump into the local culture; do as the Romans do. When it comes to getting around on vacation, this is the traveler who pedals on two wheels around Amsterdam or hops on a Vespa around Rome. Well, I can’t say that I’m that dedicated to soaking in the local culture. But on a recent trip with my wife to the San Francisco Bay Area and wine country, our rental agency made it easy by serving up a 2013 Toyota Prius. Is there any read more
